Low iron is common, and easy to wave off.
It can look like a busy year, getting older, or just “how you are now.” It can sit behind a blood count that comes back fine. Women with heavy periods are one of the groups the NIH lists as most at risk, along with pregnant women and frequent blood donors.
And when low iron is finally found, the usual answer is a large iron tablet that plenty of women can't keep taking.
